Seamus Heaney, Avenali Chair in the Humanities 1998-1999

Seamus HeaneyWinner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1995, Seamus Heaney has published more than 10 volumes of poetry, three collections of prose, one play, and numerous chapbooks, translations, and lectures; he has also edited several poetry anthologies. Born in County Derry, 30 miles north of Belfast, Heaney was educated at Queen's College, Belfast, and holds several honorary degrees. His first volume of poetry, Death of a Naturalist, was published in 1966. Heaney has held teaching positions at both Harvard and Oxford Universities.
