ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR FELLOWS, 2008-2009

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

These Fellowships are designed to provide time for research for Associate Professors in the humanities at this crucial stage in their career.

Who is Eligible?

Any UC Berkeley associate professor in the Arts and Humanities is eligible to apply. Associate professor applicants may be at any career stage but must have been tenured for at least one year. Only in exceptional cases may a Fellowship immediately precede or follow a leave of more than one semester.

Application Deadline:

Friday, March 14, 2008

Program Details:

This fellowship enables up to three Associate Professors to devote one full term to a research project of their choosing.  Each applicant must work with a “counterpart” from the full professor ranks.  This counterpart may be from any department, discipline, or school other than the applicant's own.

The applicant and counterpart may or may not have worked together previously. The Associate Professor Fellow and the counterpart will join the Townsend Fellows at one or more of their regular meetings, when the Associate Professor will discuss his or her research with the larger group.

The Townsend Center will furnish replacement costs of $25,000 to the Fellow’s home department. (The Fellow will continue to receive the normal salary.)  Departments must expend these funds within one year of the Associate Professor’s tenure in the fellowship.  Service arrangements should be worked out between the Fellow and his or her Chair.

Counterparts receive a research stipend of $2,000. They are expected to meet sufficiently with their Fellow so that they can respond to the Fellow’s research. The hope is that some pairs will continue the interaction even beyond the official term of the grant.
It is expected that the Fellow will teach a course directly related to the research project within three years of the completion of the grant.  Proposals for team teaching with the counterpart scholar are especially encouraged.

Any UC Berkeley Associate Professor in the Division of Arts and Humanities is eligible to apply for the Fellowship.  Associate Professor applicants may be at any career stage but must have been tenured for at least one year. Only in exceptional cases may an Initiative Fellowship immediately precede or follow a leave of more than one semester.
