Departmental Residencies

Funded by the Avenali Endowment, the Townsend Departmental Residencies are intended to bring to campus individuals with whom faculty and students might not otherwise have direct or sustained contact.  Resident Fellows include distinguished scholars from other institutions, writers and journalists, as well as others who can enrich academic programs but who may not necessarily be academics.

The Center especially wishes to host individuals who might not be likely or are not already scheduled to visit Berkeley. The program offers the host departments a special opportunity to integrate visitors of outstanding interest into their own programs, and at the same time to make a substantial contribution to the overall intellectual life of the campus.

Please note: Host departments are responsible for all arrangements related to the event, including visas for international scholars.

Eligibility & Requirements

Townsend Department Residencies are selected via a nomination process. Nominations for Resident Fellows are accepted from any UC Berkeley department with preference given to departments in Arts & Humanities. A designated faculty member from the nominating department must agree to serve as the faculty host for the visitor and will be expected to assist with the logistics of the visit and in coordinating the resident’s activities.

A Departmental Residency is awarded for one full month; lesser periods of time or fragmentary visits will not be considered. Resident fellows are required to contribute to the intellectual life of the humanities at Berkeley through a series of concrete activities involving students as well as faculty. They are also expected to hold scheduled office hours and to engage in at least one advertised public activity during their stay.

Grant Provision

Each resident fellow will receive an honorarium in the amount of $10,000 plus airfare (up to $500 domestic, $1,000 international) and up to $2,000 for housing expenses. The Townsend Center will also make available up to $500 to cover visa and related fees for international visitors. Resident fellows may be receiving funds from other institutions to the extent that such institutions allow, but they should not be engaged in other paid activities at Berkeley during the Departmental Residency.
