Jiahe Mei explores how perceptual disabilities reconfigured the sensory politics of early twentieth-century Chinese literature and media culture. Her dissertation, “Beyond Common Sense,” traces a counter-lineage of writers — including deaf and blind authors — to challenge Enlightenment assumptions of universal sensibility within a semi-colonial context.
