Earth and Reveries of Will: An Essay on the Imagination of Matter

"Bachelard pushed me to think about the bog as a material place as well as a mental space. His thoughts on materiality influenced the European art group known as Cobra. They in turn interested me because their fascination with bogs led one of the group’s members, Serge Vandercam, to produce a long series of works on bog bodies. The human hand, for example, becomes an important agent in the dialectic between soft and hard matter. To Bachelard the elements, like terrestrial matter, press upon the human imagination by allowing that material to facilitate the making of images and to permit the imagination to reshape it."
