Program Overview

The UCHRI Junior Faculty Manuscript Workshop grant provides financial resources to a junior faculty member to convene a workshop aimed at preparing their book manuscript for submission to a publisher. Based upon successful national models, the workshop serves as an opportunity to convene UC-wide experts in the field to contribute to the intellectual development of the manuscript. The workshop should convene experts from the faculty’s field of research, including more or less 5 UC-wide faculty plus 1-2 non-UC participants, for 1-2 days of manuscript-focused feedback. An expert editor could be counted as one of the invited participants.

The aim is to provide junior UC faculty with quality feedback from experts in the field on a first full draft of a pre-tenure book manuscript in preparation for submission to a publisher for a contract or for publication (the draft must include versions of every chapter to be included in the final book). Awarded funds may be used to cover invitee travel and accommodation, where necessary, food costs to support the meeting, and modest honoraria for the participant commentators. Manuscript workshop must take place by June 30, 2017.

Project Description

The project description should give an overview of the junior faculty’s project. Applicant should convey why the workshop will be helpful for their particular project. It should also include a timeline for when the first draft of the manuscript will be completed as well as the intended date the final manuscript would be submitted to a publisher (for a contract or publication). Additionally, the project description should identify those scholars who will be invited to participate in the manuscript workshop (the list can include both proposed and confirmed participants). As you identify the proposed participants, be sure to discuss their relevance to your project. The final list of participants should include those from at least three UC campuses, though greater multi-campus engagement is encouraged.

Funding

Funding can be utilized to support a number of program-related expenses, including but not limited to:

  • Travel and lodging for invited participants
  • Honoraria for invited participants
  • Group meals
  • Room rental costs for the workshop

Although not a requirement, the administrative unit (such as the department or campus humanities center) administering the grant may charge administrative costs for the funded amount, but there is a strict limit of up to 10 percent. In your budget please specify if and how these administrative costs will be budgeted. These arrangements should be worked out in advance and in writing with the administrative unit. Campuses are prohibited from charging indirect costs on funding from the Office of the President.
