Geoparks and Geo-Stories: Narrative, Environment, and the Preservation of “Tradition” in Brazil and Portugal

Geoparks and Geo-Stories: Narrative, Environment, and the Preservation of “Tradition” in Brazil and Portugal

Faculty Mentor(s)
Candace Slater (Spanish & Portuguese)
Student Apprentice(s)
Katie Freitas, Juan Hernandez, Erica Pallo

The summer apprentices worked closely with Professor Slater to submit bibliographic work on Portugal and Brazil, as well as working with the literature on geoparks and theoretical questions of “authenticity.” The apprentices met with Professor Slater weekly, focusing on a comparative focus in which theory helps illumine different sorts of scientific and “folk” descriptions of geoparks. The geopark theme of the GROUP Apprenticeship will play a significant role in two future courses this upcoming year in Spanish and Portuguese, as well as one in Landscape Archaeology.
