Anna Deavere Smith's work in the theater explores American character and national identity by combining the journalistic technique of interviewing subjects with the art of interpreting their words through performance. This work has been described as "a blend of theatrical art, social commentary, journalism, and intimate reverie.” Ms. Smith’s award-winning plays include Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992Fires in the MirrorHouse Arrest; andLet Me Down Easy. Ms. Smith has appeared on such television shows as Presidio MedThe West WingThe Practice; and Nurse Jackie. Her films include The American President; Dave; and The Human Stain.

Ms. Smith has received two Obie Awards, two Tony nominations, the MacArthur Award, the Americans for the Arts National Arts Award, and the Mayor’s Award in New York City. She is on the faculty at New York University in the Tisch School of the Arts, and is founder and director of the Institute on the Arts and Civic Dialogue.
