Bill Brown is Karla Scherer Distinguished Service Professor in American Culture at the University of Chicago. He is a principal investigator for the Object Cultures Project at the Chicago Center for Contemporary Theory and a coeditor of Critical Inquiry. His major theoretical work is in "thing theory," grounded in the work of Heidegger, which explores the role of inanimate objects in the formation of human subjectivities. His books include A Sense of Things: The Object Matter of American Literature.
