Camille Peters comes to UC Berkeley with a B.A. (summa cum laude) from Ohio State University and the M.A. from the University of Pittsburgh. While she has particular interests in discourses of nationalism in relation to symphonic music, she comes to Berkeley with a strong background in cultural studies, media studies, film theory, and ethnographic methodology. As a graduate student, Peters says, she wants to understand music as a cultural product, focusing primarily but not exclusively on music of the Western art music tradition. Nationalism and ethnicity, gender, and the split between classical and popular music are primary concerns for Peters; but related to all these issues is a need to understand the formation of the various musical canons, including those of scholarship and performance. Noga Wizansky, currently writing her dissertation in German, will be Camille Peters’ mentor.
