Jazz singer and pianist Patricia Barber combines a remarkable vocal range with a piano style that is both moody and charged with layers of complex rhythms. For close to 15 years, she has led her own band, appearing regularly in venues throughout the United States and Europe. The recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2003, she has taught voice at Northwestern University. Ms. Barber was hosted by the Department of Music while at Berkeley. During her residency, she participated in Professor Myra Melford’s upper-division performance workshop course, “Current Trends in Jazz and Improvisation-Based Musics,” and also led a master class on jazz singing.
