Wang Hui is Professor of Chinese Language and Literature at Tsinghua University. Sent to compulsory "re-education" in a poor inland province for his role in the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, Wang Hui is a leading member of China’s “New Left” movement and a past editor of Dushu, one of China’s most influential literary journals. In China’s New Order: Society, Politics, and Economy in Transition, Wang Hui offers a powerful analysis of China and the transformations it has undertaken since 1989, critiquing the country’s economic reforms, social polarization, and political corruption. He is also the author of The End of the Revolution: China and the Limits of Modernity. In May of 2008, Foreign Policy named him one of the top 100 public intellectuals in the world. Wang Hui was hosted by the department of East Asian Languages and Cultures while at Berkeley.
