Armchair Ethnography

The Armchair Ethnography working group attends to the filmic mediation of social worlds. The group aims to foster interdisciplinary conversations around the ways that ethnographic films represent and mediate reality, while challenging conventional definitions of “ethnographic film.” The group studies films from a range of countries and eras in order to explore different modes of ethnographic filmmaking. The group also provides a forum for participants to create short ethnographic films of their own — moving beyond the armchair, as it were.
