A candidate for the Ph.D in Rhetoric with a Designated Emphasis in Women, Gender, and Sexuality, Katrin Pahl is writing a dissertation entitled The Feminine at Work in Philosophy: Emotional Labor in Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit. Pahl’s intent is to argue that “Spirit’s” work of self-reflection in the Phenomenology is an emotional work, in particular a work of fear, of despair, and of mourning. She draws upon contemporary women writers, both in the French context of ecriture feminine and in the North American context of literature by women of color, to reevaluate the emotional as a productive force and as a resource for the process of understanding.
