UC Berkeley is justifiably identified as the “Number One Public University” in the United States, and often in the world. Its structure, however, is often unclear even to its core constituents, and to understand how that structure both protects and constrains it is essential for comprehending the way it operates at nearly all levels.
This seminar presents a broad overview of the political/public context in which UC Berkeley operates, and offers insights into the financial and social realities that bear on nearly all decisions it makes. The seminar is intended for the curious, the perplexed, the enthusiastic, and the outraged.
Anthony J. Cascardi served for ten years as Dean of Arts and Humanities at UC Berkeley, where he is the Sidney and Margaret Ancker Distinguished Professor of Comparative Literature, Rhetoric, and Spanish.
